ISSUES
LOWER COSTS BY ENDING THE TRUMP TARIFFS
It’s time to end the Trump tariffs that are rising prices from the grocery store to the gas pump and threatening San Antonio jobs, including those of our neighbors building trucks for Toyota, International Motors, and large scale farm equipment for JCB and Holt Caterpillar, as well as the jobs of the subcontractors they depend on.
MAKE HEALTHCARE AFFORDABLE
Congress’s failure to renew Affordable Care Act tax subsidies is raising premiums as much as $15,000 a year for a family of four earning over $100,000, according to Keep America Covered– affecting over 250,000 families in Bexar County alone. We need to strengthen the Affordable Care Act– not weaken it– and expand Medicaid coverage in Texas, because the more people who have insurance the lower costs are for all of us.
CREATE PATHWAYS TO HIGHER PAYING JOBS
Step one is lowering costs, but step two is raising pay for working families. We need to expand apprenticeship programs and workforce development training, giving families with the drive to compete the chance to get paid as they learn and fill the growing demand of higher-paying jobs, from clean-room technicians to nurse practitioners, skilled trades, manufacturing, and more.
KEEP OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE
We need sensible gun violence prevention legislation to ensure our children are protected from senseless deaths, police aren’t out-gunned by gangs, and we need to get serious about stopping the flow of guns south of the border that continue to arm the cartels. Passage of the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program would increase funding for local law enforcement, including resources for drug treatment and mental health and significantly reduce the crime on our streets.
STOP LAWMAKERS FROM TRADING STOCKS
It’s corrupt, and it’s high time we stop the practice of members of Congress personally profiting as they buy and sell stocks based on insider information. It’s just one more sketchy practice that encourages politicians to serve the agendas of billionaires over the needs of working families, and it’s time to shut that door for good.
IMMIGRATION AND BORDER SECURITY
Our immigration system is broken, and it will take serious lawmakers together, from both parties, as well as labor and business interests, to forge real solutions. Comprehensive immigration reform includes border security and knowing who enters our country as well as orderly pathways to citizenship, work visas and meeting our economic needs. And we also need serious reforms to ICE, refocusing the agency on targeting sex traffickers, human traffickers, and other serious criminal networks.
